I am Wouter van Wessel, originally from the Netherlands but shaped by my upbringing in Sweden. Through documentary photography, I create visual records of rural communities in Sweden, focusing on the slow processes of change within them. I capture the tension between generations in transition, highlighting the traces of these shifts through personal portraits and landscapes.
I embrace the subjectivity of my perspective, using an observational approach to explore how history and culture shape both individual and collective identities. By weaving a sentimental core into my narratives, I invite the audience to engage with the subject matter on an emotional level.
My work often carries a sense of melancholy, particularly in its exploration of isolation and rural life. Driven by these personal themes, I immerse myself in the environments I photograph, becoming part of the world I depict. This allows me to authentically capture the essence of these places, exploring the complexities and contradictions of the human experience while aiming to understand my surroundings and create a reflection of human connections and ways of life.
